On the eve of his retirement, renowned professor and Dutch linguist Frits van Oostrom reflects on a lifetime devoted to medieval literature. Having been captivated by the iconic fable of Reynard the Fox since childhood, he has spent decades unraveling it’s secrets, a journey that culminated in De Reynaert — the definitive work on this masterpiece of Dutch literary heritage. As Van Oostrom finalizes his magnum opus, he prepares to bid farewell to his professorship at Utrecht University, a poignant moment marked by a ceremonial goodbye in the Domkerk attended by hundreds of peers and friends from across the academic and literary world.
